Contractor Relies on Kobelco Excavators
Director Gary Andrews established Andrews Housemovers Ltd 37 years ago, and launched Andrews Civil 17 years ago as a diversification. The combined business now has branches in Auckland, Hamilton, Waihi and Christchurch, employing 80 staff.
Last year, the company was given the opportunity to supply plant to New Zealand’s biggest roading project – the $1.5 billion Waterview Connection. The Waterview Connection will connect Auckland International Airport with the Northwestern Motorway and the central business district (CBD).
Construction of this new motorway connection began in 2012 and is scheduled for completion in 2017. Half the new 5km length of motorway will be tunnelled to reduce impacts on the surrounding community.
As the earthworks contract progressed last year, Gary Andrews and earthworks manager Dave Askew went looking for excavators and attachments suitable for specific jobs.
“We looked at various makes available, and in the end we chose the Kobelco SK200-8 purchased from Kobelco’s New Zealand dealer Mimico Equipment. The Kobelco excavator was fitted with a digging bucket, weed bucket and a rotating rock grab.”
“It ticked all the boxes, and was available immediately. Mimico also had a servicing base right here in Takanini,” said Dave.
